Locally, York Region, businesses, industry and institutions account for about 26% of the municipal demand or about 58 million litres of water every day!

Businesses use water in three ways:

1. In air conditioning systems to cool buildings.
2. For “domestic” uses such as laundry, dishwashing, showers and toilets.
3. For manufacturing processes.

Whether it is used for an industrial process, air conditioning, landscape irrigation or simply employee washrooms, businesses use water too – sometimes lots of it. Using water wisely can help reduce operating costs and improve profitability while being friendly to the environment.

Water for Tomorrow provided building owners and managers free comprehensive water audits of their facilities to assist in saving water. Since every industrial process is different, there was not one-size-fits-all water efficiency solution. For small businesses, schools and institutions, Water for Tomorrow has provided free installation of low flow showerheads and early-closing toilet flappers.

Sixty industrial/institutional audits were completed identifying potential water savings of over 2.0 million litres per day. Although many of the businesses made simple in house changes resulting in water savings over 11 companies implemented major recommendations resulting 643,000 litres of water savings per day.

Two York Region companies were recognized for their efforts by receiving the Chairman’s Award.

Virtual water is the amount of water that is embedded in food or other products needed for its production. The total ‘water footprint’ of a nation is a useful indicator of a nation’s call on the global water resources.
