Surprisingly, not all the water the Region pumps actually reaches the end user’s tap. Some of it is lost along the way. In York Region, system leakage was estimated at 11.5 million litres a day at a cost of $1.5 million annually to local area municipalities. Depending on the age and condition of the infrastructure, municipalities typically lose 10% or more of their treated water through system leakage.

Over the last 6 years, water leakage specialists have surveyed, monitored, identified and repaired leaks throughout the 1,800 kilometers of water mains in York Region. Reducing municipal leakage has saved York Region more than 8.1 million litres of water per day. To maintain this tremendous savings it is vital that ongoing maintenance continue on the distribution system to ensure that leaks are kept to a minimum.
